Yes, you can rent a car in the Boston area at 18 with us. Every car in our fleet is open to drivers 18 and up, there's no young-driver fee, and we take both U.S. and international licenses. You don't need a driving history or your own insurance either. Here's what you need, how the deposits work and what to sort out before you book.

The short version

You need a valid driver's license, which a third-party service checks before your rental starts. You don't need a credit card. The $250 security deposit is charged (not held on a card) and comes back within two weeks after your rental if there's no damage or fees.

Plenty of rental companies set a higher minimum age or charge younger drivers extra every day. We don't.

Why you may have heard you need to be 21 or 25

You've probably heard that you have to be 21 or 25 to rent a car, or that drivers under 25 pay extra. Those are other companies' rules, and they change from company to company. Ours is simple: 18 and up, no young-driver fee, the same for every car.

Want to drive for Uber, Lyft or a delivery app? You can on our Rideshare picks: the Prius Prime, bZ4X, Mach-E, C-Max, and the white and black Model Y. Rideshare isn't allowed on the gray Model Y, the Cybertruck or our Sedan, SUV and 7-Seater SUV types. The apps have their own driver requirements too.

Documents to have ready

A valid driver's license. We take U.S. and international licenses. With an international license, you also need an International Driving Permit and your passport. The name on your license should match the name on your booking.

A phone or computer for the license check. After you book, we send a secure link, and a third-party service verifies your license before pickup. Do it at home, not at pickup, since the rental can't start until your license is approved.

A way to pay. Any of the options in the table above. You pay the booking deposit online when you book, and the $250 security deposit is a charge, not a hold on a card.

Your auto insurance (optional). You don't need your own insurance to rent. If you'd like to use your policy, upload your insurance ID card through the same verification service. It's usually checked within a day, and once we confirm your policy covers rentals, your coverage carries over to the car. Without that, you're responsible for damage to the car and any liability costs; see our rental policies. The optional damage waiver limits what you pay for covered damage to the car to $3,000 per incident, but it doesn't replace insurance.

Before you book

  • On a parent's or family insurance policy and want to use it? Upload the card early so the check is done before pickup day.
  • Decide how you'll pay the $250 security deposit, and keep in mind it can take up to 2 weeks after your return to come back.
  • If someone else will drive, get them approved and verified before pickup.
  • Miles are unlimited in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. To go further, ask us first.
